A Comprehensive Review of the 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400X

Triumph’s Scrambler line-up has been a lasting success for the British brand, so it comes as no surprise that a smaller version is included in the launch line-up for their new 400cc single-cylinder model range. When compared to bikes such as Royal Enfield’s Himalayan and Scram, KTM’s 390 Adventure, and BMW’s G310GS, the new Triumph Scrambler 400X appears to be immediately competitive.

Built on a completely new platform developed in collaboration with India’s Bajaj, the Scrambler 400X shares many components with the new Street 400 roadster. However, it features its own dedicated version of the new chassis, as well as different suspension and equipment.

Despite being a product of Triumph’s partnership with Bajaj, the Scrambler 400X will be manufactured in Triumph’s factories in Thailand and Brazil, as well as in Bajaj’s Indian plants.

The design of the 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400X is a perfect blend of retro aesthetics and modern engineering. The bike features a classic scrambler silhouette with a high-mounted exhaust, wide handlebars, and a single-seat configuration. The iconic round headlight and dual-purpose tires further add to its rugged appeal. Triumph has paid great attention to detail, with high-quality finishes and premium materials throughout the bike, giving it a truly timeless look.

Engine and Performance of the 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400X

At the heart of the Scrambler 400X is a powerful 400cc parallel-twin engine. This liquid-cooled engine delivers an impressive 43 horsepower and 35 lb-ft of torque, providing ample power for both on-road and off-road adventures. The engine is mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed transmission, allowing for precise gear changes and optimal performance in various riding conditions. With its lightweight construction and responsive throttle, the Scrambler 400X offers an exhilarating riding experience.

The 398cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine is essentially the same one featured in the new Speed 400, with no change to its peak power of 40PS (39.5hp) at 8000rpm or its torque of 37.5Nm (27.7lb-ft) at 6500rpm. However, the Scrambler gets a revised final drive ratio that, along with different tire sizes, gives it a distinct delivery compared to the roadster.

The Scrambler 400X also has its own dedicated exhaust end can, with twin exits, to differentiate it from the Speed 400. However, the main engine specifications remain unchanged. This means the same 89mm bore and 64mm stroke, the same 12:1 compression ratio, and the same DOHC cylinder head with four valves operated by finger followers. A counter-rotating balance shaft helps reduce vibrations, and ride-by-wire allows for the use of a switchable traction control system.

The absence of a high-level exhaust system, as seen on the Scrambler 900 and Scrambler 1200 models, is due to the fact that the front section of the system, including the hidden front silencer, is shared with the Speed 400. This design choice also helps keep the Scrambler narrower, so despite its taller seat, it remains easy to reach the ground.

Handling and Suspension of the 2024 Triumph Scrambler 400X

Triumph has equipped the Scrambler 400X with a capable suspension system that ensures a comfortable ride both on and off the road. The front forks feature long travel, providing excellent bump absorption and stability. The rear suspension is adjustable, allowing riders to customize the bike’s performance to suit their preferences. Combined with the bike’s lightweight frame and agile handling, the Scrambler 400X offers exceptional maneuverability, making it suitable for both urban commuting and off-road adventures.

Although the frame, which Triumph describes as a ‘hybrid’, is largely the same design as that of the Speed 400, the Scrambler 400X has a longer wheelbase, thanks in part to different suspension but also to a 20mm extension built into the chassis itself near the steering head.

That head sits at a steep 23.2-degree angle, 1.4 degrees steeper than the Speed 400’s geometry, and holds longer USD forks with the same 43mm diameter as the roadster but 10mm more travel at 150mm. Trail increases from 102mm to 108mm, and the overall wheelbase rises from the Speed 400’s 1377mm to 1418mm.

The rear monoshock is also longer, with 150mm of movement compared to 130mm on the Speed 400.

In line with its off-road style, the Scrambler 400X gets a larger 19-inch front wheel instead of the 17-incher used on the Speed 400, with a slightly narrower 100/90-19 tire. The rear is also narrower, a 140/80, but remains 17 inches in diameter. Metzeler Karoo Street rubber is standard, giving a slightly deeper tread, but there’s no option for more aggressive wire wheels or truly knobbly tires.

With various additional components compared to the Speed 400, the Scrambler is understandably a heavier bike. However, at 179kg wet, it’s still no heavyweight.
