Triumph Scrambler 1200X Review 2024: The Ultimate Adventure Motorcycle

The Triumph Scrambler 1200X features a timeless design inspired by the iconic scramblers of the past. Its classic silhouette is complemented by modern touches, creating a perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation. The bike boasts a high-mounted twin exhaust system, wide handlebars, and a minimalist bodywork that exudes a rugged and adventurous spirit. With its striking paint schemes and attention to detail, the Scrambler 1200X is a head-turner on and off the road.

It may not appear to be a radical departure, but the new 1200 X is a significant step in making Triumph’s large Scrambler more accessible to a broader audience. With a more affordable price and a low seat, it now appeals to a wide range of potential customers who previously couldn’t consider the Scrambler 1200 XC that it replaces.

These new features, combined with various revisions and updates applicable to both the Scrambler 1200 X and the off-road-oriented Scrambler 1200 XE, make these bikes a substantial improvement over their predecessors.

Engine and Performance of the Triumph Scrambler 1200X 2024

Powering the Scrambler 1200X is a 1,200cc parallel-twin engine that delivers impressive performance across the rev range. With its ample torque and smooth power delivery, the bike offers exceptional acceleration both on and off-road. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox that provides precise and effortless shifting. Whether you’re cruising on the highway or tackling challenging trails, the Triumph Scrambler 1200X delivers a thrilling riding experience.

Like the previous Scrambler 1200 models, the 2024 machines use Triumph’s liquid-cooled, 1200cc parallel twin in the ‘High Power’ version. However, the engine has been adjusted for 2024 to shift its peak power and torque lower in the rev range. The single throttle body, which is relatively uncommon, remains from the previous models, but for 2024 it is a new 50mm unit. Along with revised exhaust headers that offer improved flow and an ECU tune to match, the result is unchanged peak power and torque of 89hp and 81.1lb-ft, respectively.

However, both figures now arrive 250rpm lower in rev range compared before, 7,000rpm and 4,250rpm. Triumph claims that high-end torque from 5,000rpm to the 7,500rpm redline has also been improved. The power is delivered through a cornering traction control system that is governed by a Continental inertial measurement unit and offers five riding modes: Sport, Road, Rain, Off-Road, and Rider Configurable. As before, there is a conventional six-speed transmission with chain drive that is connected to the engine via a torque-assist clutch.

Suspension and Handling of the Triumph Scrambler 1200X 2024

One of the standout features of the Scrambler 1200X is its robust suspension setup. The bike is equipped with fully adjustable Öhlins suspension both at the front and rear, allowing riders to fine-tune the ride quality based on their preferences and the terrain they’re tackling. This advanced suspension system ensures excellent stability, control, and comfort, even in the most demanding off-road conditions. Coupled with its agile handling and responsive steering, the Scrambler 1200X inspires confidence and lets riders push their limits.

Although the essence of the steel cradle frame is identical to the previous XC model and the Scrambler 1200 XE, the new 1200 X takes a different direction with its suspension. Where the XC had Showa 45mm USD forks and Ohlins piggyback rear shocks, with a full range of adjustment at both ends, the 1200 X makes a wholesale switch to Italian Marzocchi kit. As before, there are upside-down forks and piggyback rear shocks, but the adjustability is reduced, with no adjustment at the front and just preload adjustment at the rear.

The suspension is also lower than before, with 170mm of travel at each end compared to 200mm for the old XC and 250mm for the XE variant. Like the XC, the X also has a swingarm that’s 32mm shorter than the Scrambler 1200 XE’s, reducing the wheelbase and seat height even further. The brakes are another substantial change, with Nissin two-piston, axial-mount calipers at the front gripping 310mm discs, where the old XC model had four-pot, radial-mount Brembos on 320mm rotors. At the back, there’s now a single-pot Nissin caliper on the 255mm disc where there used to be a two-pot Brembo.

That might seem like a downgrade, and on paper it is, but the addition of cornering ABS thanks to the Continental IMU – a tech that was previously only on the XE version – is a substantial safety improvement. As before, the wheels are wire with alloy rims, 21 inches in diameter at the front and 17 inches at the rear, shod with tubeless Metzeler Karoo Street rubber as standard, with the option of Michelin Anakee Wild tires if you want a chunkier tread. The bike’s weight, at 228kg wet, is a couple of kilos lighter than its predecessor.

Technology and Features of the Triumph Scrambler 1200X 2024

The Triumph Scrambler 1200X comes packed with advanced technology and features that enhance both convenience and safety. It is equipped with a full-color TFT display that provides riders with crucial information at a glance, including speed, gear position, fuel level, and more. The bike also features multiple riding modes, including Road, Rain, Off-Road, and Sport, allowing riders to tailor the bike’s performance to suit different riding conditions. Additionally, the Scrambler 1200X offers a suite of rider aids such as traction control, ABS, and cruise control, further enhancing the overall riding experience.

On board, you’ll notice a change from the old Scrambler 1200 XC to the new 1200 X in the form of simplified instruments. Instead of the color TFT used in the previous version, there is now a single circular dash pod. This dash pod is actually made up of two separate displays: a white-on-black LCD for the upper section and a small color TFT for the bottom half. If you opt for the Bluetooth connectivity module, the dash can also function as a control panel for app-based music and phone operation, as well as turn-by-turn navigation.

Under the seat, you’ll find a USB port and a foam-lined storage box where you can safely store your phone. All of the lighting on the bike is LED, including the new smaller indicators and redesigned taillight, which are the only styling changes from its predecessor. There is also a wide range of over 70 accessories available, including screens, luggage, heated grips, and protection parts.

Price of the Triumph Scrambler 1200X 2024

With a starting price of £11,895, the new Scrambler 1200 X is £800 cheaper than the Scrambler 1200 XC it replaces. This is quite remarkable considering the current inflation that is affecting almost all other goods. Although there are some cost-cutting measures to achieve this reduction, they are likely to be offset by the fact that the X model is more affordable and compact than its predecessor.

Triumph states that in previous years, the more expensive and off-road-oriented Scrambler 1200 XE has outsold the XC, with a 60:40 split between the two models. This may be due to the relatively small differences between the two bikes. With the new 1200 X, the distinction between the two models in the Scrambler 1200 range becomes much clearer.

Buyers of the 2024 Scrambler 1200 X will have the option to choose between Carnival Red, Ash Grey, or Sapphire Black colors. Dealers are currently accepting orders, with deliveries scheduled to begin in January 2024.
