MTC (Motorcycle Traction Control)

Making use of the latest generation of KTM MTC, traction is improved by using an advanced 6D Inertial Measurement Unit. This not only regulates and controls any slip at the rear wheel but also prevents uncontrolled lifting of the front wheel. With these two forces combined, the motorcycle is guaranteed the best possible acceleration. And when further combined with the data collected from the lean angle sensor, the system detects and controls power wheelies and ensures stability as well as smooth wheel landing and acceleration.

Cornering ABS

Grab a handful of brakes with total confidence thanks to a new 9.3 MP ABS unit. This allows riders to use full braking power mid-corner with the 6D sensor doing all the hard work. The 6D sensor works by continuously monitoring and evaluating the current dynamic state of the motorcycle, enhancing control and stability during braking. Also, this level of ABS technology is unmatched, providing precise and efficient stopping power with the highest level of control.

Frame

The overall geometry of the KTM 890 Adventure was developed for light handling and comfort on long-distance exploration missions – with unrivaled off-road capability. Strength was a big consideration in the design, so a tubular Chromoly steel frame is used with the engine acting as a stressed member to reduce weight and overall size. All design and engineering innovations are focused on being compact and light.

Subframe

Featuring a lightweight and solid construction, the subframe is fully loaded for adventure. The motorcycle beneath you needs to be built to last. The steel trellis subframe was developed to be compact, lightweight, and also strong enough to carry a full load of luggage as well as a passenger on even the longest, cross-continental journeys.

Stability

The 2023 KTM 890 Adventure is rock solid at any speed, thanks to a high-end steering damper. Engineered to provide unflappable composure at all times, the steering damper works to keep the front end stable when flicking through tight turns or hauling over corrugated surfaces.

Bodywork

A completely reworked and striking front end gives the KTM 890 Adventure true “Ready to Race” looks. In addition, the structure below the fairing makes use of two forged aluminum brackets that provide maximum stiffness to the front mask, windshield, and instrument tower. This, along with using in-mold graphics for durability and a low front fender designed to keep unwanted water and mud spray to a minimum, makes the KTM 890 Adventure ready for any adventure.

CTG

For 2023, the KTM 890 Adventure charges off the beaten track with an option of either orange or black color combinations. The graphics are produced with in-mold technology to ensure graphics stay looking showroom fresh after every adventure.

Aerodynamics

Despite its shorter windshield, the aerodynamics of the KTM 890 Adventure R serve a dual function. On one hand, the lower profile allows the rider to move around the bike freely when standing on the pegs – and offers an unobstructed view ahead. On the other hand, and together with the reworked bodywork, it provides optimized protection from windblast while barreling down the highway to the next trail.

Design and Build:

The KTM 890 Adventure R boasts a rugged and aggressive design that is sure to turn heads on and off the road. With its sturdy frame and robust build, this bike is built to withstand the challenges of adventure riding. The high ground clearance and long-travel suspension make it capable of tackling any terrain, from rocky trails to sandy dunes. Its ergonomics are designed for comfort, allowing riders to spend hours in the saddle without fatigue.

The KTM 890 Adventure R made its debut in 2021, offering a significant upgrade to the aging 790 Adventure R. It features an 889cc parallel-twin engine that produces 105 hp and 74 lb.-ft. of torque, thanks to its additional 90cc, 2mm larger bore, and 3mm larger stroke compared to the 790 model. The bike has become a favorite among renowned world-class riders, including Chris Birch of New Zealand, who is an instructor at the Say No to Slow dual sport riding school.

Birch, known for his riding abilities, has worked closely with KTM to develop the all-new 2023 890 Adventure R. For 2023, the 890 Adventure R receives numerous technical, ergonomic, and aesthetic updates, many of which are inspired by the Dakar-winning KTM 450 Rally.

According to KTM’s press release, the development goals for the new 890 Adventure R are clear: to provide further off-road excellence, dependability, and suitability for whatever lies on the road ahead.

The bike was unveiled at the 2022 KTM Adventure Rider Rally in western Idaho, where its next-level capability and resilience were witnessed by adventurers from around the world. The first major upgrade is the fully adjustable 43mm WP Xplor fork and WP Xplor PDS (Progressive Damping System) rear shock, both influenced by the KTM 450 Rally.

The suspension has been retuned with input from Birch to enhance riding comfort and damping, reducing fatigue during long off-road rides. The bodywork has also been redesigned, taking cues from the factory 450 Rally bike. The new fairing, fuel tank, and cowling offer improved aerodynamics and ergonomics.

The windshield may be lower, but it provides better protection from the elements and improved vision while standing off-road. Other enhancements include a higher front fender and engine protection. Another notable change is the improved 9.3 MP ABS, which utilizes a control unit that reads data from the 6D (six-axis) sensor.

This sensor communicates with all rider modes and informs the CMU (Central Measurement Unit) about the motorcycle’s angle, pitch, speed, and general behavior to apply the appropriate amount of braking force in any situation.

The new ABS system provides cornering ABS, and when Off-road or Rally mode is selected, it automatically activates Off-road ABS, reducing front-wheel ABS and completely deactivating the rear wheel’s ABS for controlled sliding through corners.

The 2023 890 Adventure R also features the latest lean-sensitive MTC (Motorcycle Traction Control), which regulates not only rear-wheel slip but also uncontrolled front-wheel lift. Using data from the lean angle sensor, MTC controls power wheelies for smoother landings on the front wheel. The 5-inch TFT display with USB connector has been updated for 2023 with a fresh look and simplified menu navigation. The surface is now scratch-resistant and glare-resistant.

An optional Connectivity Unit is available to connect the TFT display to the KTMconnect app for turn-by-turn navigation, music, incoming calls, and KTM roadside assistance. A new phone call-out function allows users to set up favorites with a maximum of 10 numbers or call one of the last 10 numbers dialed. To encourage riders to opt for package upgrades, including Rally mode, KTM offers a free demo mode for all upgrades during the first 930 miles of ownership. Other highlights of the 2023 KTM 890 Adventure R include:

  • LED headlight, brake light, and turn signals
  • Revised graphics
  • Larger aluminum guards mounted on the low-slung 5.3-gallon fuel tank
  • Spoked 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels with anodized hubs and Continental TKC 80 tires
  • Optional equipment such as Quickshifter+ for clutchless up- and downshifts, heated grips, heated seat, and cruise control

The 2023 KTM 890 Adventure R is expected to arrive at US dealerships in December 2022. KTM has not yet released the MSRP, but buyers can anticipate a slightly higher price than the $14,599 MSRP of the 2022 model. For more information, visit KTM’s 890 Adventure R page.
