Updates for 2023

The 2023 S 1000 RR borrows much of its technology from the up-spec M 1000 RR while still managing costs and meeting the expectations of a “base model.” The first thing you’ll notice are the M 1000 RR-inspired winglets, which offer up to 22 pounds of front-end downforce at high speeds. Moving further back, you’ll notice a tail section with less bodywork than earlier models. The current design gives the impression that the bike’s mass is concentrated around its front wheel.

The frame retains the same general layout as before, but BMW has added more holes in the four die-cast alloy members that make up the chassis. This allows the frame to flex more than the previous version. Additionally, the geometry has been updated, with a 0.5-degree decrease in the steering-head angle. It is now set at 23.6 degrees instead of 23.1 degrees. The triple clamps have also been redesigned, with 3mm less offset. These changes increase the trail from 3.7 inches to 3.9 inches and lengthen the wheelbase from 56.7 inches to 57.4 inches.

For 2023, the adjustable swingarm pivot previously found on the M Chassis Kit is now standard. This allows riders to tune the chassis to their preferences. Furthermore, a height-adjustable linkage for the shock has been added. Other changes include a one-tooth larger rear sprocket (now 46-tooth), which reduces the final drive ratio and improves acceleration.

The US-bound S 1000 RR models are claimed to produce the same power as before but do have some changes. The intake port geometry is based on the M 1000 RR, there’s a new airbox, and the variable-height intake funnels have been shortened. Key electronic updates include the addition of a Slide Control function, where BMW’s new steering-angle sensor provides information to the traction-control system, enabling it to estimate the bike’s drift angle. Brake Slide Assist has also been added to ABS Pro, allowing the rear wheel to step further out under braking.

Shift Assistant Pro has been updated for improved shifts, and other minor changes have been made, such as switching to a lightweight battery and a new wiring harness that makes it easier to remove the license plate bracket. There’s a small caveat with the color choices for the 2023 S 1000 RR, as not all colors are available with all the packages you may want to upgrade to.

If you want the M Package, your only option is to get the bike in M Motorsport red, white, and blue (yes, two shades). If you prefer the Style Passion Red or Black Storm Metallic paint, you’ll have to add some accessories and features separately. For example, if you want carbon fiber wheels, that option is exclusively available with the M Package, and you’ll have to settle for forged-aluminum units if you choose another package. However, this is essentially the only option that cannot be purchased separately.

Pricing and Variants

The base-model S 1000 RR comes in Black Storm Metallic for $17,895 and Style Passion Red for $18,270, plus destination and handling fees. However, there is more to consider as BMW offers three different packages that can be added to the price. BMW’s M Package costs an additional $4,495 and includes the following: M paintwork, M footrest system, black fuel filler cap, M Carbon wheels with M tapes, M lettering and new clear coat, and M sports seat.

Alternatively, customers can choose the M forged wheels instead of the M Carbon wheels. The Premium Package adds $2,340 and includes: M Titanium Exhaust System, heated grips, M Endurance Chain, Cruise Control, Ride Modes Pro, and Dynamic Damping Control. Lastly, BMW’s Carbon Package adds a few stylish and lightweight components for an extra $1,995.


Although BMW may be leading the superbike category, it still faces tough competition. Let’s start with the European competitors. Aprilia offers the RSV4 1100 ($18,999) and RSV4 1100 Factory ($25,999). Ducati, on the other hand, has the Panigale V4 ($23,895), Panigale V4 S ($30,695), Panigale V4 SP2 ($39,500), and Panigale V4 R ($44,995). Japanese manufacturers also have their own range of base and high-end models. Honda has the CBR1000RR ($16,599) and CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP ($28,900), while Kawasaki offers the Ninja ZX-10R ($17,399) and ZX-10RR ($29,699).

Suzuki offers the GSX-R1000 ($16,149) and GSX-R1000R ($18,199). Additionally, Yamaha sells the highly capable YZF-R1 ($17,999) and YZF-R1M ($26,999). Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance The S 1000 RR features a liquid-cooled 999cc inline-four engine with DOHC and four valves per cylinder. The bore and stroke measurements are 80.0 by 49.7mm, and the compression ratio is 13.3:1. It claims to deliver 205 hp at 13,000 rpm and peak torque of 83 lb.-ft. at 11,000 rpm.

The redline is set at 14,600 rpm. In Cycle World’s 2023 S 1000 RR First Ride, Blake Conner stated, “There is no doubt that the S 1000 RR is an absolute beast, offering acceleration that few production bikes in the world can match. However, I was also immediately impressed by the bike’s composure.” It is true that BMW has faced challenges in matching the power of the European versions of the S 1000 RR for the US market. This should be taken into consideration if you prioritize peak horsepower and torque figures. Nevertheless, it is reassuring to know what the hardware is capable of.

The well-designed frame of the S 1000 RR consists of four gravity die-cast pieces that are welded together, with the engine serving as a stressed member. This construction gives the bike all the characteristics required for fast laps on the racetrack.
