The single-cylinder engine has also been well tested with no significant problems reported.

However, it’s not without its flaws. During our initial test of the CB125R on its press launch in Portugal, we encountered some issues where the transmission mysteriously refused to shift from neutral into first gear. At the time, we attributed it to being a ‘sticky’ pre-production machine with low mileage. Since then, we haven’t heard of any owner complaints regarding this issue, so we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.

As mentioned earlier, some owners have also noticed that the front four-piston radial caliper can be vague at times and lacks the initial bite that learners desperately need. This has been a recurring complaint.

Additionally, another common complaint is the positioning of the battery under the tank, which makes it difficult to install a USB power socket. However, the biggest complaint regarding the CB125R is related to excessive corrosion on the black exhaust paint finish. Multiple owners have noted this issue occurring within a year of ownership. If considering purchasing a used bike, be sure to check for this problem and as an owner, regular cleaning and protection with products like ACF-50 is recommended. Mechanically though, there have been no reported issues.

Honda’s stylish CB125R is not only a great bike, but it also offers excellent value for money. When it was first released, the Honda CB125R was the second cheapest option in its class (behind the less-equipped Suzuki GSX-S125), yet it boasted similar specifications to the more expensive Aprilia SX125, KTM 125 Duke, and Yamaha MT-125. The Honda CB125R is also impressively affordable to run and, as a used purchase, it offers even better value due to its proven reliability and high quality. So yes, with the little CB, you can indeed have your cake and eat it too.

Another advantage of choosing Honda is that you benefit from a strong dealer network with the CB125R—a luxury not shared by Aprilia or KTM to the same extent. Furthermore, there should be little cause for concern when it comes to running costs.

Owners have reported fuel consumption figures approaching 100mpg, and although the CB125R’s performance may be slightly softer compared to rivals like the MT-125, this means that its consumption of consumables such as brake pads, tires (although replacing the fat rear tire may be costlier than most), chain, and sprockets should also be fairly minimal.

While Honda spare parts may not be the cheapest on the market, the CB125R’s service intervals are fairly standard and owners report an annual servicing cost of around £150 (although this will increase significantly for major valve adjustment checks), which shouldn’t discourage potential buyers either.

The CB125R also makes sense as a used purchase. Apart from some issues with exhaust paint durability, this bike has proven to be reliable. Although Honda retains its value better than most other brands and the CB125R is popular among buyers, its low initial purchase price means that used prices are not prohibitively high.
