The BMW C 650 Sport is a dynamic and stylish maxi-scooter designed for urban commuting and sporty riding experiences. As part of BMW Motorrad’s Urban Mobility lineup, the C 650 Sport offers practicality, agility, and performance, making it a versatile option for both city streets and open roads.
At the heart of the BMW C 650 Sport lies a powerful and efficient 647cc two-cylinder engine. This liquid-cooled powerplant delivers ample performance, producing around 60 horsepower and 46 lb-ft of torque, providing excellent acceleration and responsiveness. The scooter’s Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) ensures seamless power delivery, making it effortless to navigate through traffic and maintain a steady pace during longer journeys.
One of the key highlights of the C 650 Sport is its agile handling, which challenges the common notion of scooters being primarily for city commuting. With its lightweight and well-balanced chassis, the C 650 Sport feels nimble and stable in corners, providing riders with a confident and engaging riding experience. The suspension system, consisting of a telescopic fork at the front and a double-sided swingarm at the rear, helps absorb bumps and imperfections on the road, enhancing comfort and control.
The BMW C 650 Sport boasts an attractive and sporty design that stands out on the streets. Its aggressive lines, bold front fairing, and dynamic paint schemes create an eye-catching appearance. The sporty elements are further accentuated by the angular LED headlights and distinctive LED taillights, ensuring visibility both day and night.
When it comes to practicality, the C 650 Sport doesn’t disappoint. The scooter features a spacious under-seat storage compartment, large enough to accommodate a full-face helmet and other essentials, making it convenient for quick errands or storing gear when parked. Additionally, there is an available storage compartment in the front fairing, offering additional space for smaller items.
The ergonomics of the BMW C 650 Sport are designed with rider comfort in mind. The well-padded and contoured seat ensures a relaxed riding position, allowing for extended journeys without discomfort. The adjustable windscreen provides protection against wind buffeting, adding to the overall comfort, particularly during highway riding.
To ensure a safe ride, BMW equips the C 650 Sport with an array of advanced safety features. The scooter comes standard with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Automatic Stability Control (ASC). ABS prevents wheel lock-up during braking, enhancing stability, while ASC helps prevent rear-wheel slip during acceleration or deceleration, ensuring optimum traction on various road surfaces.
Another notable feature of the BMW C 650 Sport is its modern digital instrument cluster. The easy-to-read display provides essential information at a glance, including speed, fuel level, engine temperature, trip information, and more. It also comes equipped with BMW’s optional Connectivity package, which allows seamless integration of a smartphone via Bluetooth. Riders can access calls, messages, and navigation data directly on the display, keeping them connected while on the go.
Comfort and convenience are further enhanced with optional accessories like heated grips and a heated seat, ensuring a pleasant ride even in colder weather conditions. The scooter’s dual-disc front brake system, combined with a single-disc rear brake, provides sufficient stopping power, instilling confidence in the rider’s ability to handle traffic situations effectively.
Overall rating
Scooters certinly make sense as easy, practical urban transport, but neither the Sport or its larger brother the C650 GT make enough sense to warrant spending almost £10,000 – especially with cheap touches such as the cubby holes.
Ride quality & brakes
The Sport makes light work of twisty roads, dropping into corners with ease and enthusiasm and responding well to more aggressive rider inputs, although once in the corner the Sport has a tendency to be upset by bumps. A good firm squeeze of both levers is required to bring the Sport to a stop in a hurry. The seat on the Sport lacks the comfort of the GT – lower back ache sets in all too soon – and you never quite feel like you’re sat in the correct place on the seat.
Engine
The 647cc parallel twin puts out 60bhp and feels much livelier in the Sport model due to the lighter weight compared to the GT. It’s a capable engine, propelling the bike upto motorway cruising speeds with ease, and providing enough oomph to ease past cars once you get there. On greasy Spanish roads the traction control will activate when giving it full throttle from a standing start.
Reliability & build quality
The 650 is mechanically very similar to the C600 Sport, and we’re aware of no problems with the 600, so the 650 should be a solid machine.
Value vs rivals
At £9,600 there’s no getting away from the fact the C650 Sport is an expensive scooter, and despite the price it doesn’t offer any more than the competition.
Equipment
4 out of 5 (4/5)
The Sport comes with a manually adjustable screen, two cubby holes under the handlebars for small items and enough space under the seat for two helmets when the bike is stationary thanks to the clever BMW Flexcase which expands above the rear wheel. The Highline model also comes with heated grips and heated seat.
Performance Capabilities
When it comes to performance, the BMW C 650 Sport truly stands out among its competitors. Here are some performance capabilities that make this moto scooter a force to be reckoned with:
- Impressive Acceleration: With its powerful engine, the C 650 Sport can go from 0 to 60 mph in just a few seconds, providing an exhilarating riding experience.
- Top Speed: The scooter has a top speed of around 110 mph, making it ideal for both city commuting and longer highway rides.
- Smooth Handling: The C 650 Sport features a low center of gravity and a well-balanced chassis, resulting in excellent stability and maneuverability. Whether navigating through congested city streets or cruising on open highways, this scooter offers a smooth and controlled ride.
- Efficient Fuel Consumption: Despite its powerful performance, the C 650 Sport is surprisingly fuel-efficient, allowing riders to go long distances without worrying about frequent refueling stops.
The BMW C 650 Sport excels in its performance capabilities, combining the convenience of a scooter with the power and handling of a sporty motorcycle. At the core of this impressive machine lies a potent 647cc, liquid-cooled, two-cylinder engine, which delivers a robust performance output. With approximately 60 horsepower and 46 lb-ft of torque, the C 650 Sport accelerates briskly off the line and effortlessly maintains higher speeds on the open road. The engine’s power delivery is smooth and refined, thanks to the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which eliminates the need for manual shifting, allowing the rider to focus solely on the road ahead.
One of the key highlights of the C 650 Sport is its exceptional handling and agility, defying the traditional notion of scooters as mere city commuters. Its lightweight and well-engineered chassis, combined with a low center of gravity, result in remarkable stability and easy maneuverability. The scooter’s sporty suspension setup, featuring a telescopic fork at the front and a double-sided swingarm at the rear, ensures a comfortable ride even on rougher roads, while providing precise and responsive handling in corners.
With a top speed exceeding 100 mph (160 km/h), the C 650 Sport is more than capable of handling highway speeds, making it suitable for both city commutes and longer journeys. The engine’s power delivery is smooth and linear, allowing for confident overtakes and effortless cruising. The scooter’s aerodynamic fairing design helps reduce wind resistance at higher speeds, adding to the overall comfort and stability during extended rides.
In urban environments, the C 650 Sport shines with its nimble character. Its compact dimensions and tight turning radius enable riders to easily navigate through congested traffic and tight spaces. Whether it’s weaving through city streets or darting around obstacles, the C 650 Sport proves to be an agile companion, providing an enjoyable and stress-free riding experience in urban settings.
The braking performance of the BMW C 650 Sport is equally impressive, with a dual-disc front brake system and a single-disc rear brake. Equipped with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) as standard, the scooter ensures controlled and stable braking, preventing wheel lock-up during sudden stops or emergency situations. This advanced safety feature inspires confidence, particularly in adverse weather conditions or unpredictable road scenarios.
Comfort is another area where the C 650 Sport excels. The scooter’s well-padded and ergonomically designed seat provides a relaxed riding position, ideal for longer journeys. Additionally, riders have the option to further enhance their comfort with the available heated seat and heated grips, ensuring a pleasant ride even in chilly weather.
Sleek and Sporty Design
In addition to its impressive performance, the BMW C 650 Sport boasts a sleek and sporty design that is sure to turn heads wherever it goes. Some design elements that contribute to the scooter’s aesthetic appeal are:
- Dynamic Lines and Contours: The C 650 Sport features sharp lines and aerodynamic contours, giving it a bold and aggressive look. These design elements not only add to its visual appeal but also improve its overall performance by reducing wind resistance.
- LED Lighting: The scooter incorporates LED lighting technology for both its headlights and taillights, providing excellent visibility for both the rider and other road users. LED lighting also adds a modern touch to the scooter’s design.
- Ergonomic Seating: The C 650 Sport offers a comfortable and ergonomic seating position, ensuring a relaxed posture for the rider during long rides. The seat is well-padded and provides ample support, allowing riders to enjoy extended journeys without discomfort.
Safety Features
Safety is a top priority for BMW, and the C 650 Sport is no exception. This moto scooter comes equipped with several advanced safety features that ensure the rider’s well-being on the road. Some notable safety features include:
- Stability Control: The C 650 Sport features Automatic Stability Control (ASC) that helps maintain traction and stability, especially during challenging road conditions.
- Tire Pressure Monitoring: The scooter is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that alerts the rider if the tire pressure drops below the recommended level. This feature helps prevent dangerous situations that can arise from underinflated tires.
- Powerful Braking System: The scooter’s powerful braking system, combined with the ABS, ensures quick and controlled stopping power, even in emergency situations.
The BMW C 650 Sport is equipped with a comprehensive array of safety features, reflecting the brand’s commitment to rider protection and enhancing the overall riding experience. From advanced braking systems to electronic aids, the scooter prioritizes safety, instilling confidence in riders during their urban commutes and longer journeys.
One of the key safety features on the C 650 Sport is the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). ABS prevents the wheels from locking up during hard braking or emergency stops, ensuring that the rider maintains control and stability even on slippery or uneven surfaces. By modulating brake pressure on each wheel, ABS prevents skidding and minimizes the risk of accidents caused by loss of traction. This system is particularly crucial in urban environments, where sudden stops or unexpected hazards may be encountered frequently.
To further enhance traction and stability, the C 650 Sport is equipped with Automatic Stability Control (ASC). ASC is an advanced electronic system that monitors the scooter’s speed and wheel slip. If it detects excessive wheel slip, such as during acceleration or deceleration on slippery surfaces, ASC intervenes to optimize power delivery and traction. This feature is particularly beneficial in adverse weather conditions or when riding on low-grip road surfaces, minimizing the risk of wheelspin and potential loss of control.
The BMW C 650 Sport’s lighting system also plays a vital role in rider safety. The scooter is equipped with powerful and efficient LED headlights, ensuring excellent visibility during nighttime riding and low-light conditions. LEDs not only provide better illumination but also have a longer lifespan and consume less energy compared to traditional halogen bulbs. Moreover, the LED taillights increase the scooter’s visibility to other road users, enhancing safety during braking and signaling.
Another safety feature that enhances rider visibility is the optional Daytime Running Lights (DRL). The DRL automatically activates when the ignition is turned on, making the C 650 Sport more conspicuous to other motorists during daytime riding. This additional visibility reduces the likelihood of accidents caused by other drivers failing to notice the scooter in traffic.
The scooter’s lightweight and well-engineered chassis contribute to its overall safety by providing agile and responsive handling. The low center of gravity enhances stability, allowing riders to confidently tackle corners and curves. The front telescopic fork and rear double-sided swingarm suspension system ensure a comfortable ride by absorbing shocks and bumps, improving both rider comfort and control over various road surfaces.
Comfort and control are further enhanced by the scooter’s adjustable windscreen. The windscreen can be tailored to the rider’s preference, reducing wind buffeting and providing a smoother riding experience, particularly at highway speeds. Reduced wind resistance contributes to better rider concentration and lessens rider fatigue during longer journeys.
Additionally, the BMW C 650 Sport offers optional comfort features that enhance safety, such as heated grips and a heated seat. Riding in cold weather can lead to reduced hand dexterity and discomfort, which may impact the rider’s ability to operate controls effectively. Heated grips keep the rider’s hands warm and responsive, while the heated seat ensures a comfortable riding experience, reducing distractions from discomfort caused by cold temperatures.
In conclusion, the BMW C 650 Sport prioritizes safety with its extensive range of features designed to enhance rider protection, stability, and visibility. From advanced electronic systems like ABS and ASC to innovative LED lighting, the scooter ensures a safe and enjoyable riding experience in both urban environments and on open roads. With its thoughtful attention to safety and comfort, the C 650 Sport is a compelling choice for riders seeking a sporty, yet secure, urban mobility solution.
