Design and Aesthetics of KTM 125 Duke 2024

KTM 125 Duke 2024: The Ultimate Review for Motorcycle Enthusiasts

The KTM 125 Duke 2024 boasts a captivating design that is sure to turn heads on the road. With its aggressive lines, sharp angles, and signature orange color scheme, it exudes a sense of power and sportiness. The compact size of the bike makes it perfect for maneuvering through city traffic, while the high-quality build materials ensure durability and longevity.

The KTM 125 Duke was the company’s first attempt at a smaller Duke, and the 2023 model remains largely unchanged from the design that debuted twelve years ago in 2011. However, there are significant changes for 2024, as KTM introduces a completely new range of small-capacity Dukes, starting with the extensively redesigned 125 Duke.

Like its predecessor, the 125 Duke shares its core structure with the larger 390 Duke (and the 250 Duke, which is not available in the UK market), but there are visual differences that distinguish the smaller bike. For example, the side panels are slightly slimmer and protrude from the sides of the tank, and the 125 Duke’s new LED headlight, although it shares the updated family look of the 2024 390 Duke, does not have the flashy DRL strips on the nose panels that flank it.

Apart from these visual cues, there is little indication that you are riding the learner-legal 125 instead of its much more powerful counterpart. While it cannot match the performance of the 390, the smaller bike has a nearly identical chassis that promises class-leading handling.

Engine and Performance of KTM 125 Duke 2024

Equipped with a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, the KTM 125 Duke 2024 delivers impressive performance for its class. The 124.7cc engine produces a maximum power output of 14.75 horsepower and a torque of 12 Nm. This allows for quick acceleration and a top speed of around 80 mph, making it suitable for both city commutes and occasional highway rides.

The engine is essentially a completely new design, sharing its platform and ‘LC4c’ name with the new 399cc single used in the 2024 390 Duke. However, it has a smaller capacity and a completely different cylinder head. While the old 125 Duke and even the new 390 Duke feature dual overhead camshafts, the 2024 125 Duke swaps to a more compact SOHC layout. This change reduces weight, size, and component count.

Considering KTM’s experience with high-performance, single-cam engines – their 450 motocross bikes also use SOHC heads despite their high state of tune – there’s no reason to see it as a downgrade. Since the 125 Duke is aimed squarely at the learner market, its power is limited to 15hp, which arrives at 10000rpm (500rpm lower than old model but the legallyandated peak output). The torque is essentially unchanged at 8.5lb-ft and 7,750. The new engine also features ride-by-wire and/slipper clutch. An/down quickshifter can be added as an optional.

Handling and Ride Quality of KTM 125 Duke 2024

One of the standout features of the KTM 125 Duke 2024 is its exceptional handling and ride quality. The lightweight chassis, coupled with the precise suspension setup, provides excellent stability and agility on the road. Whether you’re navigating tight corners or cruising on straight stretches, this bike offers a smooth and responsive ride, enhancing both comfort and control.

The frame of the new 125 Duke is identical to that of the 2024 390 Duke, meaning it is a completely redesigned steel trellis chassis with a cast aluminium seat subframe. It is lighter than before but also has improved torsional rigidity. At the back, there is the same curved swingarm as the 390 Duke, which gives clearance for the neat underbelly exhaust and provides a mount for the offset rear shock. Like the 390, the shock is a WP APEX unit, although it lacks the adjustable rebound damping found on the 390.

The forks, visually similar to the larger 390’s, are again WP APEX 43mm upside-downers, but like the rear end, they are non-adjustable on the 125. The newly-designed lightweight wheels are common to both the 125 and 390 Dukes, reducing unsprung and rotating mass to improve handling and performance thanks to fewer spokes and an open hub design. A lighter front disc and hollow front axle further contribute to weight savings. Speaking of brakes, they are identical to those of the 390 Duke, with a four-pot, radial-mount ByBre caliper at the front acting on a super-slim 320mm diameter disc, aided by a two-piston rear caliper and 240mm disc.

Notably, the 125 Duke features a cornering ABS system, which works when leaning as well as in a straight line. It is believed to be the first cornering ABS system available on a learner-legal 125cc bike. The brakes also include KTM’s Supermoto mode, which allows the rear wheel’s anti-lock to be turned off as standard, and the electronics are designed to remember your settings so there is no need to navigate menus every time you start the bike.

Technology and Features of KTM 125 Duke 2024

The KTM 125 Duke 2024 comes equipped with a range of modern technologies and features that enhance the overall riding experience. It features an advanced TFT display that provides all the necessary information at a glance, including speed, gear position, fuel level, and more. Additionally, it offers LED lighting for improved visibility, both during the day and at night.

The 125 Duke may not have the flashy LED running lights of the 390 Duke, but it does have the same LED headlight with KTM’s latest family look. LEDs are also used in the taillights and indicators, with the latter being the first on a 125 Duke to feature self-cancelling – they turn off after traveling 150 meters or after 10 minutes, whichever comes first.

On board, the 125 Duke is equipped with the same new 5-inch TFT dash found on the2024 390 Duke complete with bonded glass display and a standard lap timer. It also includes a speed limiter function, which can be useful when there are speed cameras around, and phone connectivity through KTM’s own app, allowing for turn-by-turn navigation and control over music and phone calls.

Like the 390, the 125 Duke comes with redesigned, illuminated bar controls as standard, and offers a wide range of options such as protective crash bars, a quickshifter, and even the opportunity to upgrade to the 390’s LED running lights, making it even more difficult to tell the smaller bike apart from its larger counterpart.

Safety of KTM 125 Duke 2024

When it comes to motorcycles, safety is always a top priority, and the KTM 125 Duke 2024 takes this aspect seriously. The bike is equipped with a variety of safety features that ensure riders can have peace of mind on the road. One of the standout features is the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), which plays a crucial role in preventing wheel lock-up when sudden braking is needed.

This technology helps maintain optimal control and stability, making it an invaluable asset for both experienced and novice riders alike. In fact, beginner riders can especially benefit from this feature as they are still honing their braking techniques and may find themselves in unexpected situations. With the KTM 125 Duke 2024, safety is never compromised.

Ergonomics and Comfort of KTM 125 Duke 2024

Despite being a compact bike, the KTM 125 Duke 2024 offers a surprisingly comfortable riding position. The ergonomics are well-designed, with a slightly forward-leaning stance that allows for better control and stability. The seat is well-padded and provides ample support for long rides, while the handlebars are positioned perfectly for an easy reach.

Until we’ve ridden the 125 Duke, it’s impossible to comment on its comfort. However, KTM mentions that the seat is lower than the previous model, and the upgraded suspension certainly indicates an improvement. No MPG figures have been claimed yet, but it’s unlikely that a 125cc single will consume unleaded fuel at a high rate.

Fuel Efficiency of KTM 125 Duke 2024

For those who are concerned about fuel consumption and its impact on the environment, the KTM 125 Duke 2024 is an ideal choice. This motorcycle is equipped with an impressive fuel-efficient engine that has been meticulously designed to optimize every drop of fuel. The lightweight construction of the bike further enhances its fuel efficiency, allowing it to deliver an average mileage of approximately 50-60 miles per gallon.

This means that not only will you be able to reduce your carbon footprint, but you will also save a significant amount of money on fuel expenses in the long run. By choosing the KTM 125 Duke 2024, you can enjoy a thrilling ride while being mindful of your fuel consumption and its impact on both the environment and your wallet.

Price and Value for Money of KTM 125 Duke 2024

When it comes to price point, the KTM 125 Duke 2024 offers excellent value for money. While it may be slightly higher priced than some competitors in its segment, it makes up for it with its superior performance, build quality, and advanced features. Investing in this bike means investing in a long-lasting, high-performing machine that will provide endless riding enjoyment.

KTM has not yet announced the price of the 2024 125 Duke. Given that deliveries are not expected until January and inflation is still high, we can understand why. The 2023 model is listed at £4,799, so it would not be surprising if the price of the 2024 model exceeds £5,000. This is quite a lot, especially if you are looking for a short-term, disposable 125 as a temporary solution until you can get rid of your L-plates. However, if you plan to own it for a longer period of time, the 125 Duke will not be a burden to ride and is likely to retain its value better than many cheaper machines.
