For more than a decade, Triumph has been pursuing the goal of creating an entry-level model range to attract new customers. After some false starts, the result is finally here: the Speed 400. Developed and built in cooperation with India’s Bajaj, the Speed 400 is the debut model for an entirely new platform centered around a 398cc single-cylinder engine.
With this new model, Triumph will not only compete with retro-styled rivals like Royal Enfield’s HNTR 350 and Honda’s CB350 (both key competitors in the Indian market), but also with BMW’s G310R and KTM’s 390 Duke in Europe and other regions. Unlike Harley-Davidson’s Asian-market X350, which is a reworked version of a Qianjiang/Benelli design, the Speed 400 is a clean-sheet design aimed at the global market. While partner Bajaj will manufacture some of these bikes in its Indian plants, others will be produced in Triumph’s existing factories in Thailand and Brazil.

Engine and Performance of the Triumph Speed 400 2024
At the heart of the Triumph Speed 400 lies a powerful engine that packs a punch. Powered by a liquid-cooled, inline-four engine, this motorcycle delivers impressive performance on both city streets and open highways. Coming in at 398cc, the new single-cylinder Triumph engine, known as the ‘TR-series’ to pay homage to previous singles in the firm’s history, outperforms most of its direct rivals in India. Triumph claims that the DOHC, liquid-cooled motor produces 40PS (39.5bhp) at 8,000rpm. It employs similar design elements as the Bonneville’s 900cc and 1200cc twins to mask its modernity, such as fins on the cylinder and a mostly concealed radiator that gives the illusion of an air-cooled design. The exhaust also cleverly conceals the front silencer and catalyst, creating the appearance of a direct connection from the cylinder head to the end can.
Indian-market competitors like Royal Enfield’s 350cc singles and Honda’s CB350 H’Ness and CB350RS have about half the power of the Triumph despite having similar engine capacity. European-focused bikes like the BMW G310R and Honda CB300R trail slightly behind with 34hp and 31hp respectively, but still fall short of the Speed 400. Only KTM’s 390 Duke, which generates 43hp, truly rivals the Triumph (and like the Speed 400, it is assembled by Bajaj in India on behalf of KTM).
The engine features a counter-rotating balancer shaft to balance smoothness with the distinctive pulsing character of a single-cylinder engine. It has an 89mm bore, the same as KTM’s 373cc ’390’ engine, but with a slightly longer 64mm stroke (compared to KTM’s 60mm) to increase capacity and torque. Torque peaks at 37.5Nm (27.7 lb-ft) at 6500rpm.
The Speed 400 includes switchable traction control and a ride-by-wire throttle, along with an assist-and-slipper clutch between the engine and the six-speed transmission. However, Triumph has chosen not to complicate the Speed 400 with multiple riding modes.

In terms of luxuries, the Speed lacks phone connectivity that is increasingly becoming the norm.
The clocks feature an analogue speedometer and greyscale secondary LCD display for fuel, gear position, trip meter, and service indicator. While there is a USB-C port on the clocks, it is only for charging and does not support data connection. Heated grips are available as an option, with controls already in place via the dash. Additionally, there are various seats, screens, and other accessories that can be customized to suit individual preferences.

Price of the Triumph Speed 400 2024
How much will the Triumph Speed 400 cost? £4,995 on the road. While Indian customers have been able to purchase the bike since late summer, UK customers will have to wait until late January for it to reach dealers.
The company stated that the price will be competitive with European rivals, suggesting that the BMW G310R (which is priced at £5,190) is its main target. However, a starting price below £5,000 will be appealing to many. When it does become available for sale, it will be offered in three colors: Carnival Red, Phantom Black, or Caspian Blue, each featuring an oversized Triumph logo on the tank.
At the end of July, Bajaj released a statement reporting 16,000 bookings so far.
