Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024 Review: The Ultimate Adventure Motorcycle

The Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports has long been known as one of the most capable adventure motorcycles on the market. With its rugged design, powerful engine, and advanced features, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports is built to tackle any terrain with ease. In this blog post, we will dive deep into the 2024 model of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports and explore its key features, performance, and why it continues to be a top choice for adventure enthusiasts.

Design and Styling of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024

Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024 Review: The Ultimate Adventure Motorcycle

The Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024 boasts a bold and aggressive design that exudes adventure. It features a large front fairing with twin LED headlights that not only enhance visibility but also give the motorcycle a distinctive look. The high windshield provides excellent wind protection, allowing riders to stay comfortable even during long rides. The Adventure Sports model also comes with a larger fuel tank capacity of 24.2 liters, providing an extended range for those epic off-road journeys.

Despite its rugged Dakar-inspired looks and the ‘Adventure’ moniker, Honda considers the Africa Twin Adventure Sports model to be more focused on road touring compared to the standard Africa Twin. For the 2024 model year, Honda has made significant updates aimed at enhancing the bike’s capability for long-distance travel. The most notable change is the switch from a 21-inch front wheel with a 90/90 tire to a 19-inch front wheel with a 110/80 tire.

Additionally, the Adventure Sport now features updated styling and the manual transmission version is no longer available in the UK market, further emphasizing its touring role. Another significant update for 2024 is that electronic suspension, previously only offered on higher-spec versions of the bike, is now standard on the Adventure Sports model.

Engine Performance of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024

The heart of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024 is its powerful 1084cc parallel-twin engine. This liquid-cooled engine delivers impressive power and torque, making it an ideal choice for both on-road and off-road adventures. With a maximum power output of 101 horsepower and 105 Nm of torque, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports offers exhilarating acceleration and smooth power delivery across the rev range.

The 1084cc parallel twin engine, featuring an SOHC ‘UniCam’ cylinder head inspired by the CRF450R motocrosser and a 270-degree crankshaft to replicate the firing pattern of a 90-degree V-twin, is largely familiar but incorporates internal updates that promise increased low and mid-range speeds. These engine modifications are also present in the standard 2024 Africa Twin, which will continue to offer manual transmission and non-electronic suspension, while receiving its own set of styling and technical enhancements.

While peak power remains unchanged at 100.5hp, torque has increased to 82.6lb-ft – a 7% boost compared to the previous model – thanks to various revisions, including an elevated compression ratio of 10.5:1 instead of 10.1:1, wider intake ducts, 65mm longer intake trumpets, and a new exhaust system with a modified silencer to complement the intake changes and improve performance and sound. What’s more impressive than the torque increase itself is the fact that peak torque is now achieved at 5,500rpm, shifting the overall torque curve significantly higher than the previous model and promising improved acceleration throughout the low and mid-rpm ranges.

The Adventure Sports variant offers a total of six rider modes – Tour, Urban, Gravel, Off-Road, and two customizable settings – each affecting throttle response, power, ABS settings, and traction control. The traction control system itself features seven settings, all assisted by the bike’s IMU, which measures acceleration and lean angle to adjust the level of intervention.

Wheelie control is also standard and linked to the IMU, offering three settings to control how high the front wheel can be lifted. While the standard Africa Twin shares the same engine, the Adventure Sports version can only be equipped with Honda’s DCT seamless-shift transmission, offering semi-automatic and fully-automatic modes through two clutches and an electro-hydraulic control system. Similar to the engine, the transmission utilizes data from the IMU to determine when the bike is

leaning over, preventing untimely automatic shifts. In addition to being able to switch between manual and automatic modes – with manual controls available via bar-mounted buttons or a conventional foot pedal – the DCT provides ‘D’ and ‘S’ modes in its automatic setting, which adjust the shift points. Furthermore, there is a ‘G’ setting that customizes the shifts for off-road usage.

Suspension and Handling of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024

To tackle the toughest terrains, the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024 comes equipped with top-of-the-line suspension components. It features fully adjustable Showa suspension with long travel, allowing riders to fine-tune the bike’s handling according to their preferences. Whether you’re riding on rocky trails or tackling sand dunes, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports offers exceptional stability and control.

The chassis of the 2024 Africa Twin Adventure Sports is shared with both the standard Africa Twin and the previous model. However, for the new model year, there are a couple of key changes to position the Adventure Sports differently in the market. Firstly, there is no longer the option of a basic version without Showa EERA electronic suspension. Secondly, the 2024 bike is equipped with a 19-inch front wheel instead of the 21-inch wheel found on the old model and the standard Africa Twin.

The EERA suspension offers four settings – soft, mid, hard, and off-road – which are self-explanatory. Additionally, there is a ‘user’ mode that allows for more changes to be made while on the move. The rear preload is also adjustable while in motion.

The switch to a 19-inch front wheel, paired with a wider 110/80-19 tire, indicates a clear shift towards an on-road focus. While this may slightly diminish the bike’s off-road ability, it promises better grip and stability for the majority of riding conditions. Honda has also reduced the suspension travel for the Adventure Sports from 230mm front and 220mm rear to 210mm front and 200mm rear. This helps lower the center of gravity and seat height, making the bike more manageable, which is particularly welcome considering the Adventure Sports’ weight of 253kg.

As a result of the shorter suspension and smaller front wheel, the Adventure Sports has 30mm less ground clearance compared to the standard Africa Twin. The trail is reduced from 113mm to 106mm, and the wheelbase is cut from 1574mm to 1550mm.

Similar to the base 2024 Africa Twin, the latest Adventure Sports model features tubeless tires instead of tubed ones. The standard tires are Bridgestone Battlax Adventure A41s, with the option of more off-road oriented Michelin Anakee Wild rubber.

The radial-mount, four-pot brakes and 310mm discs are the same as those found on the standard Africa Twin. These are coupled with cornering ABS controlled by a Bosch MM7.10 IMU that oversees the antilock, traction control, wheelie control, and rear-wheel-lift control systems.

Technology and Electronics of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024

The 2024 model of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports comes packed with advanced technology and electronics to enhance the riding experience. It features a comprehensive digital instrument cluster that provides riders with useful information such as speed, gear position, fuel level, and more. The Adventure Sports variant also includes a 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that enables cornering ABS and traction control for improved safety and stability in all conditions.

Like the standard Africa Twin, the Adventure Sports features a large 6.5-inch TFT color touchscreen display that can be operated with gloves on to control its main functions and modes. Bluetooth, Apple Carplay, and Android Auto are included as standard features, with a USB port located to the right of the display for physically connecting a phone. In addition to LED headlights and DRLs, the Adventure Sports also includes three-stage cornering lights that automatically illuminate the inside of turns based on lean angle, as measured by the IMU.

Despite the focus shifting further towards on-road use, the bike still comes with a large sump guard, similar to previous models. Optional packs are available, including the Rally Pack, Urban Pack, Adventure Pack, and Travel Pack, which provide additional protection, luggage, and equipment. Other optional parts include a low seat option, various side tank pads, and an SC-Project slip-on silencer.

Comfort and Ergonomics of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024

Long rides demand comfort, and the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports delivers just that. It features a spacious and well-cushioned seat that provides ample support for both the rider and pillion. The ergonomic design ensures a natural riding position, reducing fatigue during extended journeys. Additionally, the adjustable windscreen allows riders to customize the airflow according to their preference, further enhancing comfort on the road.

The reduced suspension height promises to make the Africa Twin Adventure Sports both more comfortable and more accessible by lowering the seat height to 835mm (adjustable to 855mm). Additionally, an optional low seat drops it below the 800mm mark at 795mm. The standard seat is also 15mm thicker than the previous version, increasing comfort and providing 8% more seat area to distribute weight on.

Like the standard Africa Twin, the Adventure Sport’s screen can be adjusted to five positions and is mounted on a new-look front fairing designed to improve wind protection and aerodynamics. With a fuel tank capacity of 24.8 litres, the Adventure Sports model has a 6 litre advantage over the base model, resulting in a claimed range of over 300 miles with an economy of 57.6mpg.

Off-Road Capability of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024

One of the most impressive and remarkable features of the Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports 2024 is undoubtedly its unparalleled off-road capability. This exceptional motorcycle is specifically designed to conquer every conceivable off-road challenge that dare stand in its way. With its remarkably high ground clearance, extensive long-travel suspension, and incredibly sturdy chassis, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports effortlessly overcomes even the most treacherous and unforgiving terrains.
