It was a significant change in 2021 when Ducati launched the new V4 Multistrada. The focal point was the Granturismo motor, a new V4 derived from the Panigale, instead of a V-twin. It featured a counter-rotating crank and spring-operated valves, deviating from the traditional desmodromic actuation. The Ducatisti were in turmoil.
However, they were soon won over once they fired up the V4, with its impressive 168bhp/170hp/125kw @10,500rpm, and 92lbft/125Nm of torque @ 8750rpm. The new Grand Tour carries the same impressive motor, and for those planning big tours and covering long distances, service intervals remain at 36,000 miles (60,000km) before clearance checks are necessary. Those who loved the old V-twin couldn’t argue with the smooth and easy-revving power of the new four-cylinder power unit. Furthermore, while the V4 may have been a couple of centimeters wider than the old V-twin, it was even lighter, by 1.2kg, as well as shorter and lower too.
Unfortunately, because the new Grand Tour shares its V4 with the current V4 S and not the new 2023 Rally, it doesn’t benefit from the latter bike’s cylinder deactivation system (also installed in the Diavel), which deactivates the back two cylinders below 4000rpm, improving fuel economy, emissions, and crucially, reducing engine heat to the rider at low rpm. Instead, the Grand Tour has the same older system as the V4 S, which only drops the rear two cylinders when stationary.

The seat is plush and supportive, while the adjustable windscreen provides excellent wind protection. Additionally, the bike features heated grips and a heated seat, allowing riders to stay cozy even in chilly weather conditions. The Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour also offers ample storage space with its side panniers and top case, making it an ideal choice for those who love to travel with all their gear.
The large, adjustable screen is still not electrically driven, which some may see as a flaw on a premium tourer. However, it is very effective and only takes the lightest of touches to operate. Even at speeds of 140-160kph, I could ride with the visor up without my eyes watering or experiencing any discomfort. And yes, I did forget my clear visor for night riding.
The 6.5-inch TFT dash is adopted from the S model (the stock Multistrada has a five-inch display) and comes with full connectivity and navigation. There is a lot of information displayed, especially when the navigation screen is active, but it is relatively simple to navigate and the backlit switchgear is a nice touch.
Comfort and cosseting on the new Grand Tour are also improved with heated grips and heated seats for both the rider and pillion. The pillion also gets a plusher perch stolen from the Rally released earlier this year. Ducati has also tried to reduce heat for the rider, with new heat shields on the swingarm and the left side of the rear subframe, as well as new closeable air ducts on either side just in front of your legs. Both of these features will appear on the Multi for 2024 and were first seen on the Rally.
I generally don’t notice the engine heat generated by the Multistrada’s rear bank of cylinders, but on this trip temperatures reached over 30 degrees and that changed somewhat. In Bologna traffic, my lower body warmed to the point of almost discomfort, and while it won’t be a regular issue for those of us riding in, say, Yorkshire next year, our Australian buddies will be disappointed that the new GT doesn’t have rear cylinder deactivation at low rpm like the Rally.
Ducati claims 43mpg, the same as the standard V4 S. I usually average just under 40mpg on a Multi V4, and over two days on this test, I averaged 37mpg. With a 22-litre fuel tank, Ducati suggests over 200 miles between fuel stops are possible, but in reality, it’s around 180 to 190 miles depending on how and where you ride. To be fair, covering 180 miles in one stint would be easy on the Grand Tour as comfort is excellent. Interestingly, the bars are new, mounted directly without any ‘silent blocks’ to give a more direct feeling; despite this change, they don’t appear to have increased any discomfort or vibration.

When it comes to handling, the Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour truly shines. It features fully adjustable Öhlins suspension components that offer a smooth and controlled ride over any terrain. Whether you’re navigating twisty mountain roads or venturing off-road, this motorcycle inspires confidence with its exceptional stability and precise handling. The suspension system can be easily adjusted to suit individual riding preferences and load conditions, ensuring optimal comfort and performance at all times.
As mentioned, we had two days of riding, with the 60-liter panniers fully loaded with gear and clothes for an overnight stay. However, the added weight was hardly noticeable thanks to the GT’s Skyhook semi-active suspension. The quoted weight of the Grand Tour has yet to be confirmed but is expected to be slightly more than the standard bike due to the extra features.
On the road, however, the bike’s weight seems to disappear. Even with all my gear and a full tank of petrol, it doesn’t feel like it’s close to 250kg. Like its engine performance, the Grand Tour’s handling characteristics depend heavily on the selected riding mode. The Touring mode is plush and on the softer side, but still provides control and stability when you want to make the most of the powerful Italian engine.
In Sports mode, the Marzocchi Skyhook suspension transforms the Multistrada Grand Tour into an incredibly sporty touring bike. The suspension movement and travel are reduced for more control when pushing hard, braking deeply, and accelerating aggressively. It’s amazing how fast you can ride on such a comfortable bike and do so with confidence as the suspension handles almost anything you throw at it.
We encountered some rough, poorly paved surfaces in the hills above Bologna but barely slowed down because the GT never felt like it was reaching its limit or about to behave unpredictably. For a bike with a 19-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension for a roadster, it offers integrated and responsive handling, supported by some of the most advanced rider aids available. Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), and cornering ABS are all present and lean-sensitive. Their input and intervention levels depend on the selected riding mode, working in the background to keep you safe while having fun.
The 2024 Grand Tour also comes with two helpful suspension features as standard: minimum preload and easy lift. The minimum spring preload function allows the rider to reduce the preload of the rear shock to a minimum setting at low speeds or when stopped. This increases sag and effectively lowers the seat height as the rider’s weight compresses the spring more easily. The amount the seat lowers depends on the weight on it. I’m 172cm or 5ft 6.5ins, and with the preload reduced, I could securely put both feet on the ground, almost but not quite flat-footed. Once riding, you can press the button on the left handlebar to increase the preload back to normal or the system will automatically add preload once you reach 110kph.
Tall or average-sized riders don’t need to worry as this isn’t an automated system like some of the competition; the rider has to manually select the minimum spring preload. The only automated aspect is the reintroduction of preload as speed increases, which I assume is for safety and stability reasons. Easy Lift is another useful tool that comes standard on the Grand Tour. It softens the suspension when the ignition is on, making it easier to lift the bike from the side stand. With a fully loaded bike – including panniers, top box, and a full tank – it makes a noticeable difference.

The V4 S Grand Tour may appear to be a 2023 Multistrada V4 S with several factory options added, but it is actually a new model for 2024. While it is possible to purchase a 2024 Multi V4 S and add all the extras yourself, doing so would be more expensive and you would not have the distinctive Grand Tour livery, which includes color-matching panniers and other unique details like black rear pegs and swing-arm.
The price of £23,595 is £3100 higher than the standard 2023 V4 S (£20,495) and £6600 more than the standard non-S V4 Multi (£16,995). It is nearly the same price as the large-tank Rally (£23,590), which does not come with luggage as standard like the new Grand Tour, and is still cheaper than the sporty Pikes Peak (£26,595). If you only want to add traffic-hunting radar to the standard 2023 V4 S, it would cost an additional £1000, bringing the price to £21,495. Adding radar and the Travel Pack (which includes panniers, a center stand, heated grips, and a heated seat) would add £2500, making the price £22,995. With the Full package, which includes a carbon front mudguard and an Akrapovic muffler, the price would increase to £24,345.
However, these prices are based on the 2023 model, not the 2024 model. If you were to take a Multi V4 S with the Travel and Radar package (£22,995) and add a Keyless fuel cap (£218), Fog lights (£307), and TPMS (£256), the total price would be £23,785, which is more expensive than the new GT at £23,595. Opting for the new GT actually saves you money compared to a fully equipped V4 S and you also get the attractive livery.

If price is your main consideration, KTM’s 1290 Super Adventure S starts at just £16,599 but you would need to add accessories to bring it closer to the Ducati.

Like most people on Earth, I was impressed with the versatile Multistrada V4 S when I first rode it on similar roads back in 2021. Since then, I have ridden many more miles, which has only increased my high regard for this versatile and energizing all-rounder. Now, Ducati has added even more specifications, along with a few tweaks from the excellent V4 Rally, to create not only the best Multi for long-distance touring, but arguably one of the best bikes for sporty fun when you arrive as well.
It’s smart, flexible, and easy-going, with premium comfort and safety features. Plus, with classy new panniers, it’s perfect for a week away too. Add 170nhp, the ability to go like lightning, and offer sports bike levels of performance and fun, and you have a very exciting proposition. It’s not cheap, but service intervals are wide, and the price is justified by the machine’s quality and specifications. The GT doesn’t have the rear cylinder deactivation of the Rally, and those who ride in hot climates will feel the heat as any V4 engine does.
Additionally, the phone compartment is a little fiddly, and one could argue if the Enduro mode will ever be needed. Will anyone take a GT on any serious off-road adventures? Ducati already has an excellent Multistrada in the V4 S, but now the Grand Tour, with its attractive new livery and impressive specifications, has made the Multi more appealing than ever. It’s an impressive package indeed when you need ten minutes just to list all its new goodies.
